Group exhibition – Sandra Nakamura, Claudia Martínez Garay y Arturo Kameya

From: August 11th. Until: September 18th, 2015.

Analogías temporales  present two projects which although set in different historical contexts relate to each other, once they are placed side by side at the gallery. El azul de la distancia (2015) by Sandra Nakamura is a group of silkscreen prints made from a photograph of Frank Hurley after the expedition of The Endurance, taken during the failed Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of Ernest Shackleton in 1914. The images suspended from the ceiling and consecutively ordered in the space, range from low to high contrast, ending in the gradual disappearance of the photographic image. Meanwhile the series of photographs printed in lenticular sheets by Arturo Kameya and Claudia Martínez,  belong to the series Mass illusion (2012), based on  photographs of 1950s  Korean Mass Games, where groups of young gymnasts compose huge images in a collective way with hand-posters, forming figures that symbolized the Korean People’s Democratic Republic of Kim II –Sung.

Both projects appropriates historical photographs and worked to force the evocation of a temporality found in the original image by creating different final artworks. Its metaphorical appeal tries to demonstrate enthusiasm and the heroic future of collective work in both endeavors and by opposite correspondence, these efforts express the subordination of the individual by the collective.  The multiple readings in the contrast of both projects reveal characteristics and differences of the photographic medium in each of the images: exposure, timing and multiplicity are delicately arranged in Nakamura´s installation and circular works of Kameya-Martínez.
